Found glass or plast...

Found glass or plastic in mashed potatoes. We came here on our last day of a family holiday booked 2 tables as there is 9 of us including kids. Food tasted great and all enjoyed it except one person. My wife offered me to try hers as it tasted nice and when I took a taste of her potatoes I felt a crunch. Picked it out and it was like a chunk of glass or plastic in it. She didn’t eat anymore of hers. The waitress came at the end and took our plates away and I discreetly told her about this. She took it away and said no more on it. Once I went to bar to pay I asked if she gave it to the chef and found out what it was which she replied yes I’ve given it to him. No apology or nothing. Such a shame as up until that point we did all enjoy it

Food review only. Dated and poor value for money. Hubbys burger was ok, but my battered chicken was really not great. The couple sat next to us were also unhappy. Hubby knows when I’m not happy because when I’m asked if it’s good I say thanks but not yes.

Not the place it used to be. Food mediocre (overcooked goldfish and chips). Sullen jobsworth couldn’t crack a smile if he tried. Been here lots of times. Won’t be back.

Good traditional pub...

Good traditional pub/restaurant, with excellent local food and service. We tried the haggis, neeps & tatties with whisky gravy starter. It was fantastic! As was the venison pie and chunky kit Kat cheesecake! We definitely highly recommend this restaurant.

Met my friend Paul w...

Met my friend Paul who I haven't seen for 3 years up the road from where we were staying. He booked a room upstairs and decided to go for a drink in there before venturing anywhere else. One pint turned into another and we didn't leave until closing time. There was live music and a great atmosphere of a traditional boozer. It was a great catch up followed up with a thick head the next day but overall it was a great place to have a catch up with an old friend. We even ventured to the pub across the road after this closed, was also good there but much preferred it at the Star, alot more homely. Would happily visit again! Food menu looked good too!

From the very minute...

From the very minute we walked in we were made to feel very welcome. The room was lovely A good size, nicely decorated and the bed was extremely comfy. We had dinner which was very good. Lots of delicious choices on the menu and what we had certainly didn't disapoint! Breakfast the next morning was equally as delicious. Great choice, freshly cooked and plenty of it. The waitress was really friendly and very attentive.

Stopped by for food with the dog, made to feel very welcome... Only 2 tables allowed at once, with a dog.. . Food was delicious, staff were really friendly and professional... Will happily return and gladly recommend to others .😁👌

Had a lovely meal here tonight, food was delicious, service prompt but it didn't feel like you were being rushed. Avoid trying to book to eat on a Wednesday as they don't do non resident food that day as we discovered. Also good idea to book, especially on the summer as it gets busy.

We decided to stop here for lunch as we drove by, and were very pleasantly surprised by the food at this hotel. Delicious, freshly cooked and a nice variety. Plus they not only had several gluten free beers/ales, but also a significant portion of the menu being gluten free, including homemade pies!! Thank you for an amazing meal!!

I called in for food...

I called in for food at 8pm, which is right on the limit of when they stop taking orders for food, and was seated with a smile on a little table in the ground floor dining room. It was busy, cosy and had a pleasant atmosphere. I chose the chicken, ham and leek pie with mashed potatoes and vegetables. This was very tasty and well presented. Vegetables consisted of peas, green beans and carrots which were cooked nicely and plenty of them. The mash was fine, heated through and plenty of it. The pie came in its own dish with a flakey pastry top which was nicely cooked on the outside, crispy and golden, but was slightly soft on the inside which for me was perfect because I generally prefer short crust pastry. There was plenty of filling, in a white sauce containing lots of meat, and tasted delicious. To wash it down I had a pint of belhaven 80 shilling which was a perfect accompaniment. All in all a nice meal, in a pleasant setting, at a very reasonable price

I like this place. It's probably the best pub in Moffat to be honest given its overall offering. Not much choice of real ale, but the jocks aren't fussy what they drink and it has a good choice of the typical keg brews (Tennents, Belhaven) that remind you you're in a special country. There's a nice lounge and a good bar with the sports. I've had the food before and it's good and I've never stayed but I expect the accommodation and welcome would be first class. The price looks very good.

Stopped off on the way back from a trip to Scotland. Lovely little family run hotel and restaurant. The service is really friendly and warm. The food is unassuming, home cooked and tasty. Well worth a visit.

We have eaten here a couple of times, all staff are very welcoming and friendly. Great atmosphere and cracking food with prompt service and check ins. We will be back and can't wait to stay overnight too.

Popped in for lunch and opted for fish and chips. The fish was OK, but the chips were cool and very crisp. Felt like they had been through the fryer more than triple fried and then put aside. Other dishes in the party seemed OK.

Vsitied the Famous Star restaurant on our way to England from Scotland on a Sunday evening. Best place for that last or first stop in Scotland to try the famous haggies! The staff were very accomodating and we got a table without an advance booking which was really nice. Our meals were amazing, the haggies is wonderful, and the Scotsman burger was really nice too. This place is a gem! Staff is really friendly and attentive. The village of Moffat is definitely worth a visit, with a local souvenir and sweet shop with ice cream opposite the restaurant. Also heard the local butchers sell the best haggies. We will certainly stop by again.

Small quaint hotel,...

Small quaint hotel, comfortable bed, quiet outside, if you're on the middle floor, you can hear the squeaking of the people walking above, so try to get a top room floor. Other than that, great price for the hotel, plenty of parking out front that's free. , Bar and restaurant downstairs and lots to eat around the community. Lots of little stores nearby, nice place to stop.

We visited the famous star hotel and restaurant yesterday I ordered the steak pie with chips and peas and my wife ordered the gamon steak with pineapple and egg with chips and a side of mushrooms. The food is cooked to order and it is well presented when it arrives the steak pie is one off the best that I have ever had the meat quality and content was unbelievably good and was the gravy so 10/10 from me and my wife's gamon steak was very thick and she stated that it was top quality I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel for its food as it is 1st class I will be back at some point it the future also the staff are very friendly and professional.

Old hotel with an authentic restaurant reflective of days gone by. The food is good, the service friendly, fast and attentive, and a pint of beer is fun. The historic elements has been well preserved. The Venison pie with sweet potato fries was excellent. Recommend the pudding for dessert!

Wij hadden de familie kamer, met z'n 2en. Wat een luxe👍 Super ontbijt, wij willen niet altijd eieren, en niet iedereen heeft een behoorlijke continentale ontbijt. Nou...zij hadden héérlijke ham, en kaas👍 Het personeel is erg vriendelijk! Het eten héérlijk, jammer dat ze niet elke avond open zijn voor diner.

For the price we paid I thought the hotel was excellent in a great central location. Very helpful staff. We had rooms 7 and 8 for single use - they are doubles and would be fine for a couple for a night or two but perhaps on the small side if staying longer or with a lot of luggage. Comfy beds, very clean rooms, nice bathroom with walk in shower which I prefer to over bath shower. We decided to try local restaurants but I have to say the lunchtime food we saw being served looked delicious. Opted not to pay for breakfast as just wanted quick light breakfast from nearby cafe so can’t comment. Would stay again.

Lovely meal, very pleasant service, if I had 1 complaint it would be that there was no sausages in the steak pie. Scottish steak pies have sausage in them, preferably square sliced, hahaha. I digress, it was lovely. Might try it as a basecamp sometime in near future, as opposed to just a day trip out. ☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

Called in just for a coffee, the lady said they were only serving meals and drinks. She then took pity on two cold strangers and promptly sat us down. Food looked good, it appeared best that you booked in advance as several customers were turned away. Nice coffee washed down with a shot of rum.

With a group of three colleagues, we arrived for dinner after an evening meeting. There was a mix up with the booking, our fault, and the team at the hotel bent over backwards to help us and make sure we got dinner. The menu was great, food arrived quickly and was freshly cooked and delicious. Will definitely be back next time I'm in Moffat. Thank you Star Hotel

We stayed at the legendary "Star Hotel" when doing the Southern upland way and they were so kind to keep our bags ready for us half way through our trip so we could have a decent night's sleep some food and a resupply, and then we came back to collect our bags after we finished and stayed an extra night before we ventured home. The food was fantastic and the rooms were clean and cosy with a great shower. Highly recommend and thanks for your hospitality

Had lunch last Sunday after a cold day in the hills. It was super busy but the lovely staff fitted us in. It was cosy and warm. Our chicken and rice soup was the perfect winter warmer and my veggie lasagne was tasty. Nice wee place but the staff were a stand out. Friendly and happy.

Great place. We called in after a long day hoping for a nice meal. We had a great meal and the staff were fantastic. Food was very fresh and really tasty. Young lady who took our payment was really nice. Very chatty and polite. If we are ever up that way again we'll be back here for food.

Central location with lots of free parking nearby. Rooms are clean, fairly comfortable and warm. Nice traditional feel to it. We paid £10 per head for breakfast though- I feel that it's a little steep for what we were offered by the menu. Advertises food everyday but then was told that the kitchens were closed on Wednesdays. Probably won't go again, but overall not bad.

We were in Moffat & decided to pop into the Star for some lunch. It has changed in as much as if u want a drink, without food, then u have to go to the other bar. Which in my recollection, can get a bit noisy at times. Not perhaps during the week at lunchtime though.... My partner had a gammon steak which was really thick cut. I had the Aberdeen Angus burger. I was very disappointed to see that it was served on a board, which to me didn't seem terribly clean, it had a lot of cut marks on on it too. I stopped using a wooden board to cut up veg, due to the problems of getting it clean & germ free. Anyway, I would have preferred a plate. So, I covered it with a napkin. I didn't say anything, but that was my perogative.... We quite enjoyed it, and I know everything has increased in price, but we found it really quite expensive for a meal...

Très bonne table dans cet hôtel reconnu pour être étroit. Sur la photo le haggis et le steak pie. Le décors à l'intérieur est très agréable avec un ne playlist des années 50/60. Le service est parfait. Le nombre de table est limité, nous avons été chanceux mais je conseille de réserver.

Staff very accommodating, friendly and helpful when needing assistance. Bed was so comfortable. Fascinating building. Good mix of history and lovely room. We were delighted. Food quality and portion size was excellent too.

just had a meal here. it was delicious! we had the steak pie and the chicken, leek and ham pie . They were home cooked, the pastry was flaky and crisp with 4 different vegetables. The service was very attentative.

Friendly helpful staff, this was our 2nd stay great room, great price, great location. Especially love the garnishing in the gin. I wouldn’t recommend the burgers, you could have broke windows with mine, I spoke to another customer who said the same. Overcooked, cooked in an oven? or cooked from frozen? It wasn’t burnt, I just couldn’t get the knife through it.

This quirky hotel was everything we expected and more. Our room was comfortable and cleaned to a very high standard. Not sure if rooms have recently been refurbished but carpets and fittings were immaculate. This contrasted with the old world charm of the rest of the hotel. Staff were attentive and welcoming. We had breakfast and dinner both nights. The menu is varied and the food is well cooked. I would highly recommend the chilli and the haggis, neeps and tatties! If you have mobility problems maybe the Star is not for you(two spiral staircases to reach our room) We we’re fascinated by the history of the building and weren’t disappointed. Can’t wait to go back.

Great service tonight in what must be extremely trying times for the food service industry. The staff were fantastic, never took their eyes of what was going on around them, seeing to queries and table service and cleaning, very promptly. Good pub grub, served quickly on a very busy evening. The Star Hotel have definitely stepped up to the challenge .

We came for an evening meal and thoroughly enjoyed it. I had the macaroni cheese (my favourite) and my husband had the venison from the specials board. The staff are always pleasant and attentive and we like the comfortable, homely atmosphere. We tried to book again tonight but couldn't get a table, but will be back soon. Thank you

Needed a meal - tried the Star because of the quirkiness. Meal was good. The usual small Hotel/Bar fare but also veg./vegan options. Good portions, other diners served happy and it was obvious that quite a few people eating there visited every few months when travelling to a holiday break destination. Good service. Couldn’t fault any of the staff which these days seems unusual for many places!

Its a great family run pub. the food is amazing. I have just stayed there for 3 nights in one of their newly refurbished rooms and they are amazing. The TV with Netflix built in was fantastic. It's just a shame that the accommodation it's not pet friendly anymore, but they are welcome in the pub though.
